2023 Foreign / NRI Category: Who Can Apply

MAHE admits candidates under Indian / Domestic (General) or Foreign / NRI category (International), on fulfilling the eligibility requirements. All admissions are on the basis of merit.

Foreign / NRI category seats are available only for

  • Foreign Nationals
  • Candidates with NRI status
  • Candidates sponsored by relatives with NRI status
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)
  • Person of Indian Origin (PIO)

Foreign / NRI category seats are NOT equivalent to payment / management / reserved seats.

 

1. Foreign / NRI / NRI Sponsored Category Admissions

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) allocates 15 % of its seats under the Foreign / NRI category. This includes Foreign Nationals, Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card Holders, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and NRI Sponsored candidates (sponsored by parents OR brother / sister of parents* OR brother / sister of the candidate* OR grandparents of the candidate* OR spouse of the candidate*). The sponsorer must be a foreign national or hold NRI status.

 

All Foreign / NRI / NRI Sponsored admissions to UG & PG programs (other than those listed in the note below), will be on a first-cum-first-serve merit basis, subject to the candidate’s performance in the 10+2 (for UG programs) / Bachelor Degree (for PG programs) of India or equivalent examination in addition to meeting the various eligibility requirements of respective programs as stipulated by the regulatory bodies. There will be NO entrance examinations. Candidates who have confirmed their admission under the Foreign / NRI category, by paying the full first year program fee CANNOT take an admission under the General category.

 

2. Qualifications

Candidates seeking admissions to Under Graduate (UG) / Post Graduate (PG) / Super Specialty (SS) should have obtained their qualifications from a recognized Board / University. For PG programs, the candidates MUST have a Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years’ duration from a recognized University as per program requirement. Candidates with Foreign qualifications must submit equivalency certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, as per program requirements. 2.1 Under Graduate (UG) Admission

MAHE considers candidates with the following Boards / qualifications

  1. 10+2 of India obtained from recognized Central (CBSE / ISC) or State Boards
  2. GCE ‘A’ Levels
  3. International Baccalaureate (IB)
  4. Others like 12 Year High School Diploma from accredited Schools of USA; 12 years General Secondary Education Certificate of the Ministry of Education Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries; Intermediate / Senior Secondary / Higher Secondary examinations of the approved Boards in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal etc.

 

2.1.1 Indian Boards

The certificate issuing board must be established / recognized by

  1. An Act of Central / State Government
  2. A Gazette notification of Central / State Government
  3. Executive orders issued by Central / State Government

 

2.1.2 International Boards

The eligibility is based on the qualifications recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. Refer www.aiu.ac.in for full list of foreign qualifications, as equivalent to the Pre-University or 12th Grade qualification of India, for the purposes of admission in Indian Universities

 

2.1.2.1 University of Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Levels / Edexcel GCE ‘A’ Levels / British Examining Bodies

Candidate seeking admission to the Undergraduate (UG) programs offered by MAHE should have completed

  1. Minimum 5 (Five) passes at IGCSE / GCSE / GCE ‘O’ Levels including English
  2. Minimum 2/3 (Two / Three) subjects at GCE Advanced Level (‘A’ Levels), depending on the program requirement
  3. Average of ‘D’ grade in 2/3 subjects at GCE Advanced Level (‘A’ Levels), depending on the program requirement
  4. Should meet subject-wise eligibility as laid down by the respective statutory bodies /council / university

 

Note

  1. Candidates with 2 ‘A’ level subjects should have 5 (Five) passes at IGCSE / GCSE / GCE ‘O’ Levels with 'C' grade or above, including English
  2. Candidates who have completed 10th Grade of Indian Board and completed GCE Advanced Level (‘A’ Levels), should have taken English at the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level
  3. Candidates who have completed 10th Grade of Indian Board and completed GCE Advanced Level (‘A’ Levels), should have minimum 3 subjects at GCE Advanced Level (‘A’ Levels)

 

2.1.2.2 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

  1. IB Diploma candidate should take 3 subjects at Higher Level (HL) and 3 subjects at Standard Level (SL)
  2. Candidate should have secured a minimum of 3 points in a subject
  3. Candidate should have secured an overall minimum of 24 points, with 12 points in HL and 12 points in SL
  4. Should meet the subject-wise eligibility as laid down by the respective statutory bodies / council / university

 

2.1.2.3 International Baccalaureate (IB) Certificate

  1. Candidate should have taken minimum 3 subjects in HL and 3 subjects in SL
  2. Candidate should have secured a minimum of 3 points in a subject
  3. Candidate should have secured an overall minimum of 24 points
  4. Should meet the subject-wise eligibility as laid down by the respective statutory bodies / council / university

 

2.2 Post Graduate (PG) Admission

Candidate shall be eligible for admission to a Master's degree program on successfully completing the prescribed Under Graduate (UG) program of minimum three years’ duration from a recognized University and is eligible for the award of degree.

 

Note

  1. All General / Foreign / NRI admissions to UG (MBBS / BDS)PG (MD / MS / MDS / PG Diploma) and SS (DM / MCh) programs will be based on the rank obtained in National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) and online counseling & seat allotment by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) / Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) / Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) / Jharkhand State Counseling Authority (JCECEB) (wherever applicable).
  2. All General / Foreign / NRI Candidates seeking admission to UG (BArch) MUST qualify through a recognized aptitude test in Architecture i.e. NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) conducted by Council of Architecture (COA). * There are NO NRI sponsored seats (sponsored by NRI relatives as mentioned above).
  3. Eligibility and Admission Process is subject to change, as per the guidelines received from the concerned statutory body / MHRD / MCI / DCI / PCI / AICTE or any of the courts.
  4. All admissions are subject to fulfillment of all eligibility conditions by the candidate. If it is found at a later stage, during active verification, that the candidate has given false information / certificate(s) / eligibility documents from non-recognized Board / University or is found to have concealed some Information, his / her admission will be cancelled without any notice and the fee paid by the candidate shall be forfeited. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility requirements for the program applied.
  5. All applicants / parents MUST read Public Advisory before applying for any program

 

3. VISA

All foreign nationals admitted at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) can study with a Student Visa only. 

  • Students’ should apply for a Student Visa, that is valid for more than 180 days in the Indian Consulate / Embassy located in their countries
  • Such students on their arrival in India to start classes, will have to register online with the Foreigner’s Registration Office (FRO)(www.indianfrro.gov.in) within 14 days of their arrival in India
  • Once registered the students will be issued a Registration Certificate (RC) and Registration Permit (RP) to his / her email address.  
  • A copy of the RC and RP MUST be submitted to the International Admissions Office, MAHE.

 

Note

  • Student will have to carry a copy of the RC/ RP while travelling in India as well as produce it to the Immigration Office in the airport every time they return to their country
  • If the Student Visa expires during their study, students will have to apply for extension of their student visa online (www.indianfrro.gov.in) at least 60 days prior to its expiry
  • If the foreign national wants to apply for a Student Visa from their home country when they go on vacation, will have to collect the Bonafide Certificate from their respective institution /colleges and Eligibility Certificate from the International Admissions Office, MAHE Manipal
  • Foreign nationals should renew their RC and RP online (www.indianfrro.gov.in) as and when it expires or if they come with a new student visa
  • Foreign Citizens of Indian origin with a People of India (PIO) Card or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) are permitted to study in India without a Student Visa and need NOT register with the FRO

 

Some Frequently asked questions ...

How can a foreign national apply for a Student Visa in the Indian Consulate / Embassy?

  • A foreign national who has confirmed admission and has paid the first-year course fee will be issued the Confirmed Admission letter by the Admission’s Office of MAHE.  With this letter, the student can apply for a Student Visa in the Indian Consulate / Embassy.

 

Do foreign students admitted to health science courses require ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MHRD), Government of India (GOI)?

  • Yes, as per the Government of India (GOI) regulations, all foreign students admitted to health science courses like medical, dental and nursing require ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the MHRD, GOI.  International Admissions office of MAHE on behalf of all the foreign students admitted, will apply for the NOC from the MHRD, GOI after they officially register with the University and start the classes.  With the NOC received, the student can apply for their long term ‘Student Visa’ at their Indian Embassy / Consulates.

 

Do foreign students admitted to other courses like engineering, management, architecture, pharmacy, etc. require ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Government of India?

  • No.  As per the Resolution dated June 1, 2004, issued by the Department of Secondary & Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India (GOI), NOC is not required for foreign nationals who wish to pursue their higher studies in India in all institutions / university departments offering technical courses leading to Diploma, Degree and Post-Graduate Degree in Engineering & Technology, Architecture & Town Planning, Pharmacy, Applied Arts, MBA, MCA, Hotel Management & Catering Technology, etc.
