MIV is one of India's premier virology research centres, with the capacity to diagnose infectious diseases with different viral etiologies. MIV provides state of an art diagnostic facility to diagnose viral diseases while supporting public health services in disease surveillance and outbreaks response contributing to global health security. It also conducts research in basic and applied virology, epidemiology, diagnosis, vaccine, and therapeutics. MIV is also the NVBDCP Apex Referral Laboratory for Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, and Chikungunya under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India programs. MIV offers PhD (Virology) and Master of Science in Clinical Virology programs.

Manipal Institute of Virology (MIV), Manipal is a centre for diagnostic virology and research activities. It is the regional reference laboratory for Influenza viruses and an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Grade I Virus Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) supported by the Department of Health Research (DHR) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India (GOI).
