M. Tech Industrial Biotechnology - Overview
MTech Industrial Biotechnology Program Description
The Department of Biotechnology at MIT, MAHE, Manipal offers M.Tech program in Industrial Biotechnology. The objective of this program is to provide a pragmatic approach to biotechnology focused on industry and research based careers. The program curriculum is a blend of core principles of biological sciences, computational analyses, and process engineering principles.
We have well qualified faculty members providing experiential learning and mentoring students’ research projects in specialized areas such as biopolymers, nanotechnology, drug delivery, microfluidics, bioinformatics, bioreactor design, fermentation engineering and scaling up of industrially important products. The department received many extramural and intramural funded research projects in aforementioned areas. The department exemplifies the blend of faculties from science and engineering streams of biotechnology.
Focus of the Program
Industrial biotechnology involves the application of biotechnology for industrial purposes. Applying the techniques of modern molecular biology, it improves efficiency and reduces the multifaceted environmental impacts of industrial processes. It includes the practice of using cells such as microorganisms, or components of cells like enzymes, to generate products in sectors that are industrially useful. The courses such as Advanced bioprocess engineering, Molecular biology & r-DNA technology, Animal cell culture techniques, Bioreactor design and analysis, Bioprocess modelling, and Biomolecular data analytics will be taught with relevant case studies to make the students industry ready and equip them with the advanced industrial techniques. The students can study industry-specific, custom-designed program electives such as Animal and plant biotechnology, Biopolymer technology, Design and development of biological treatment processes, Environmental biotechnology, Immunotechnology, Pharmaceutical biotechnology, solid waste management, Statistical design and analysis of experiments in biotechnology, and Systems biology. They can also opt for open electives that are interdisciplinary in nature.
Career Prospects
The Institution’s placement cell, industry collaborators, and alumni network will facilitate placement and internships as biotechnology scientists, process development engineers, biomanufacturing specialists, technical solution managers, and as research associates. The program targets placements and internships in top biotechnology companies such as Biocon, Syngene, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Laurus Bio, HIMEDIA, Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Stelis Biopharma, B-Aegis Life Sciences & Research, IQ4I Research and Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., Next Big Innovation Labs, and DRG analytics and Insights Pvt Ltd. The department has also tied up with various biotechnology and healthcare companies for the internships and placements.
